Can Secure Screens on Hardware Wallets Prevent Address Poisoning, Clipboard Hijacking, and Malicious Smart Contract Approvals?
Secure screens are not so secure!
Using a hardware wallet is the best way to get self-custody in crypto with security.
Having a screen on a hardware wallet is not sufficient; the screen must be directly connected to the Secure Element (SE) chip. Such a screen is known as a Secure Screen.
Some hardware wallets come with a Secure Screen, while others do not.
Hardware wallets that do not have their own screen rely on the computer or smartphone screen, which is connected to a non-secure MCU chip.
Every screen is powered by a chip which is responsible for the information that the screen shows. When a screen is directly controlled by an SE chip, the displayed details can always be trusted, as the SE chip is secure and resistant to hacking.
But this statement is not true for address poisoning and clipboard hijacking, and malicious smart contract approvals.
