From my latest research, I've realized that 85–90% of my views come from external sources, not from the platform itself. Here is an example taken from one of my trending articles.

You can see that 87% of views are external views. But it is still earning $645.72 from just 13% internal views.

You already know that Medium only pays for internal views of your stories based on Member reading time. If they paid for external views, I would earn thousands of dollars for the above article.

However, external views are still useful for us. Why? I’ve found three reasons.

With the Medium referral program, each external view is an opportunity to get a referred member who directly supports your writing.

Because 85–90% of my views are external views, I have a great opportunity to get a high number of referred members. So, I highly consider including my referral link in the “Short bio” section which appears on my stories and at the bottom of each article. It works for me. At the time of writing, I have 76 referred members who directly support my writing.
